Trauma Sensitive Yoga
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM TRAUMA SENSITIVE YOGA?
The main objective of Trauma Sensitive Yoga is to use gentle yoga forms and movement in a safe space to help you notice what you feel in your body and help you make choices about what to do with your body based upon what you feel.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR YOGA TEACHER(S)?
guidance, support and help you to focus on particular aspects of the yoga (e.g. breathing, moving, resting).
creating a safe, supportive and compassionate group environment
catering for all abilities with the option of a chair and/or a yoga mat in each class
not offering physical adjustments or assists
Participants do not have to talk to each other acknowledging that some people may find it difficult to be in group situations.
The yoga style taught is not religious, nor affiliated with any particular yoga style. It is based upon the work of Bessel van der Kolk and David Emerson from the Trauma Centre Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) in Boston.
A maximum of 10 participants will be in each class on any given week, and all will have committed to the 8-week course.
HOW TO ACCESS TRAUMA SENSITIVE YOGA CLASS?
This class can be self-funded and self-referred by contacting the facilitators.
This class can also be funded under ACC Sensitive Claims (ISSC) (as Short Term Group Therapy) if you have an approved claim. Talk to your lead provider to request this.
WHO WILL THE FACILITATORS BE?
The two yoga facilitators will be Sandra Palmer and Bridget McNamara, Registered Psychologists and yoga teachers who completed their training at Contemporary Yoga Training in Auckland.
WHAT TO BRING?
Everything is provided. All you have to do is wear comfortable clothes.
